Armed commandos try to free leader of Los Zetas

Released : Saturday, November 08, 2008 4:29 PM Mexico City, Nov 8 (EFE).- An armed commando group tried to rescue Jaime "El Hummer" Gonzalez Duran, leader of the Los Zetas gang of hired gunmen, when he was being taken to the airport after being nabbed in the town of Reynosa, authorities said Saturday. Gonzalez Duran, one of the founders and kingpins of the crime group that operated for years as the armed branch of the Gulf cartel, was arrested in an intelligence operation by federal agents in Reynosa in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas on the U.S. border. While he was being taken to the airport from where he was flown to Mexico City, an armed commando group, supposedly Los Zetas, attacked the police escort, according to the Federal Public Safety Secretariat, or SSP. Despite the shootout that ensued, the suspected hired killers were unable to rescue Gonzalez Duran from the soldiers and police.
